But, once money mediates exchange, it not only takes on a life of its own but so do the motives of the parties in exchange. For money has the effect of homogenising exchange in the sense that all goods are measurable against one another in the single dimension of money. Whilst commodities necessarily have different use values, they almost appear to lose them in being set against money. In the market everything has its price. As Simmel (1900: 394) puts it, cited and critically discussed in Fine and Lapavitsas (2000: 371), money ‘forces an extraneous standard upon things, a standard that is quite alien to distinction’.

One is the relationship of theory to structures, not least how globalisation, in the form of financial markets or transnational production for example, relates to the nation-state. For Lewis et al. (1996), globalisation raises the issue of what are the units of competition – nation-states or corporations? And, what are the mechanisms of competition – resources, culture or organisation? A second theme is the role of (underlying) processes, not least as the parent of them all, globalisation, is unpacked into its constituent and interacting elements.

Others are more measured. 11 Such positive support could equally be withdrawn in the future, for capital and trade controls for example, as occurred with the protectionist stances adopted in the interwar period. This is all primarily to draw attention to globalisation as the economic and its effects – economic or otherwise – on nations, states and nation-states. It paints too narrow and distorted a picture relative to the vast weight of literature. For Therborn (2000b) there are at least five discourses around globalisation – competitive economics, social criticism, state (im)potence, culture and ecology.
