C. to be pushed forward. Such 'powered' or 'self-advancing' supports are almost universal in modern mechanised coalfaces. The face equipment is advanced during the cutting run of the coalface machine by the four operations that are usual with powered supports: 1. pushing the conveyor forward by extending the horizontal jack 2. releasing the pressure on the support unit, lowering the props 3. advancing the support unit by pulling on the conveyor 4. applying pressure on the props again, tightening them to the roof Since, for one group of supports, all these operations are completed in a few seconds, there is only a very short time when the roof is unsupported, and during this time the units each side of the released one can carry its share of the load.

About 1 metre) of the coalface because the men worked close up to it. The coalcutter passed up (or down) the face in a space 2ft 6in. wide, in front of this forward row of props with only the protection of the overhanging wood or steel bars. The idea of a prop-free front, with up to 6ft 6in. (about 2 metres) of roof unsupported in front of the row, had to be approved by the Mines Inspectorate for safety reasons. It was illegal, and at first sight seemed dangerous, to allow so much unsupported roof between the coalface and the nearest row of props.

Is an all-steel trough structure running the length of the coalface and strong enough to carry the several-tons weight of the cutter-loader that slides along the top of its trough. An endless chain or two chains within the trough pull steel paddles (flights) that drag the coal to the end of the trough, where it is discharged to the roadway transport system. The flow of coal is there turned at right angles as it meets another steel chain conveyor, the stage loader. This. in turn delivers on to a belt conveyor, and the coal is then well on its way to the mine shaft.
